Back at the start of 2021, we canvassed opinion within the gravel world to try and come up with predictions for where things were likely to head this year. Our predictions included greater diversity within the gravel bike sector, bigger tyre clearance as standard, a return to favour of 2x drivetrains and greater emphasis on ride local/minimum impact/fit-it-in-when-you-can gravel events. At the risk of patting ourselves on the back too vigorously, it looks like the design & engineering team at Canyon were asking the same questions and coming up with the similar answers! Today they launch their brand new gravel bike – the Grizl.

In the gravel world according to Canyon “Grizlin‘ is just like riding, but with your priorities set right. Experience over performance. Stories over glories. Grizlin’ means rolling out the door with an open mind, not knowing quite what’s going to happen”. That sounds like a perfect gravelly adventure to us, so the question is why should you make a Canyon Grizl your bike of choice for rides like these?

Canyon already have a race-orientated gravel bike in their range with the Grail (and the Grail:ON e-gravel bike for gravel riders looking for e-assisted riding), so they’ve aimed the Grizl firmly at the more adventurous end of gravel riding instead.
- ‘Standard’ cockpit set-up – no double bar system for the Grizl
- Geometry optimised for adventurous gravel terrain
- Shorter steams/wider bars fitted across the range
- 700c specific frame design for all but the smallest frame sizes, with ample clearance for 50mm tyres (45mm tyres fitted as standard)
- Integrated seatpost clamp design to allow for more frame compliance as standard
- Frame and fork mounts for mudguards
- Choice of carbon layups at two price-points - the top of the range frame weighs in at only 950g
- Frames ready for either 1x or 2x drivetrains and compatible with internally routed dropper posts
- All Grizl CF SL models fitted with Shimano GRX groupsets
- Equipped as standard with 160mm rotors front and rear, but will accept 180mm rotors too
- Ready for bikepacking trips – luggage mounts on fork legs/top tube/underside of downtube (all with required bolt specification and torque settings printed next to them – a small touch of genius)
- Collaboration with Apidura to produce a set of bikepacking luggage tailor-made for the Grizl
The Canyon Grizl looks to us like it has everything we would want in a gravel bike for adventure riding - we suspect it’s going to be a big success and will fly off the shelves in no time!
