News - Pan Celtic Gravel Rally 2023 launched

When we clicked on the link to the promotional photos for this year’s Pan Celtic Gravel Rally we thought two things – “holy moly those images are spectacular” and “that looks brutal”. Taking part in a motor rally-inspired gravel event based in the forests and mountains of Snowdonia is always somewhat of a gamble weather-wise, as it’s not exactly known for its hot and sunny climate, but with the organisers putting the event on at the start of May this year, here’s hoping the participants have a bit more sunshine than last year!

In case you’ve not heard of the gravel version of the Pan Celtic Rally, this description from the organisers will give you a great idea of what to expect:

“The Gravel Rally is a micro-adventure that plants your tyres firmly on the earth beneath you, paying homage to the spirit and roar of the traditional motor rally scene that can be found echoing around the forests and mountains in Snowdonia. The course tackles a range of terrain, from mountain balcony road to deep immersive forests, with stunning lakes, open moorland and green lanes, The Gravel Rally promises to whisk you away into a challenge unlike any other. In an age where we are having to accept more responsibility for our actions and the impact they have on the environment, we decided to look for a more sustainable and conscientious way to continue with the tradition of rallying these courses.  From this simple conception, the Gravel Rally was born.”

The Pan Celtic Gravel Rally 2023 offers participants the choice of two routes – a short option (96kms and 2129m of climbing) or a longer version (128km plus 3060m of climbing), plus an optional 16km night stage the day before the main event.

Described as “synonymous with motor rallying for over a century, our foray into this test of nerves and skill will pit our Rally Riders against a 16km course. Twists, turns, descents, rises and some super quick single-track will all have to be navigated - in the dark. Lights are a must, as is a pinch of courage, a splattering of luck and a large scoop of crazy!” by the organisers, the night stage sure sounds like fun!

The event is being held at The Adventure Parc Snowdon, famous for its massive inland surfing lagoon and adventure activities.  In terms of accommodation, you can book a basic camp pitch, luxury 2-person fully furnished bell tents, 4-person glamping pods and the Hilton hotel for those wanting some pre and post-race pampering.

Here’s hoping for some sunshine for 2023.
