Product Description

If you’ve seen any review of a mountain bike in the last two or three years you will have undoubtedly read the words long, low and slack in the opening paragraph. The logic of designing off-road bikes like this is to help them fit the holy grail of being stable, fun and confidence inspiring. In the past couple of years, gravel bike design has been slowly edging this way too, albeit generally in tiny steps, rather than giant genre-defining leaps.

So, the launch of the Grail:ON by Canyon will put quite a large cat among the gravelly pigeons! Not only is it longer, lower and slacker than its older sibling, but tyre clearance has also been increased to allow riders to run 50mm tyres too.

Oh, and in case you hadn’t noticed, it’s also now electrified! Perhaps we should have mentioned that sooner.

Canyon describes their latest addition to their gravel line-up as “A bike that takes the iconic design of the Canyon Grail gravel bike, and then applies it to the game-changing world of e-gravel riding. By combining the Grail’s proven stable-yet-agile geometry with powerful, high-torque support from a Bosch Performance Line CX Gen4 drive system, the Grail:ON lets all riders quickly mix up their routine with a dynamic off-road riding experience”

The Grail:ON is fitted with a Bosch Performance Line CX Gen4 motor, combined with a 500Wh battery. The bike has four power settings – Eco, Tour, Sport and Big-grin Turbo. The motor will produce 85 Nm of torque, which Canyon describe as giving it an “addictive ‘just-one-more-burst’ riding experience. “ The Grail:ON is speed restricted to 25kph in Europe and 32kph in the USA due to differences in legislation governing e-bike use.

It’s obvious from the details of the frameset and componentry choices, how much inspiration the Grail:ON’s designers have taken from Canyon’s MTB range – shorter stems, wider handlebars, boost-width rear hubs, bigger volume tyres, clearance for disc brake rotors of up to 180mm diameter and a frame strengthened in key places with downhill bike carbon layup thicknesses.

But the Grail:ON isn’t just about burliness, the comfort has been built in too – Canyon have specced their distinctive double-decker cockpit and leaf-sprung seatpost.
